We will be surrounded by some of the world's largest dunes as we make our way to the Sossusvlei/Deadvlei area. Today’s challenge will be to climb Big Daddy, roughly 380m high. It can be challenging, taking up to 2 hours to reach the top. Once you are up there the view is breath taking and the feeling of completion is very rewarding. Going down the dune is another unforgettable fun moment. After exploring and getting some sand in your shoes, we can enjoy a lovely pick nick brunch under the evergreen Camelthorn trees.

On our way back, we will visit the Sesriem Canyon, which means "six ropes" in Afrikaans. The canyon is roughly 30 meters deep, and if we're lucky, we may find water inside. Once we return to the guest farm around lunchtime, the rest of the afternoon will be at your leisure until dinner, where the next day's activities will be explained.

Sossusvlei is a prime example of Namibia's untouched beauty, and a popular tourist destination located within a National Park spanning over 50,000 square kilometers. Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are situated in the Namib Desert, which is the oldest desert in the world. The Namib Desert boasts a Sand Sea of nearly 800,000 hectares, best appreciated from above. The towering red dunes, mostly star-shaped but sometimes linear, are a stunning feature of this landscape. The name "Sossusvlei" comes from the Nama word meaning "a cup" or "a saucer." Both Sossusvlei and Deadvlei have large, stark white pans. Deadvlei is known for its eerie, ghostly trees that are must-see. Just after the Shipwreck we will pass a small town and then turning right back into the badlands. On our way we will see the highest mountain, The Brandberg standing at 2573m on our left. The vegetation will start re appearing in small trees and bushes. Passing a small mining town, we are almost at The Brandberg White Lady Lodge, where we will have lunch. In the late afternoon we will be going out by vehicle in the dry riverbed called the Ugab in search of the Desert adapted Elephants.

Skeleton Coast is one of the most remote and desolate regions in the world. Characterized by vast sand dunes, rocky shores and dense fog, it earned its eerie name due to numerous shipwrecks along its treacherous coastline. The harsh environment has made it challenging for both humans and wildlife, yet it is home to unique species like deserted adapted elephants and other animals. The coastline offers a stark contrast between the desert and the Atlantic Ocean, creating hauntingly beautiful landscapes that remain largely untouched by human development, preserving its natural raw allure.

Desert-dwelling elephant description: Desert elephants or desert-dwelling elephants are not a genetically distinct species of elephant but are African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) with unique characteristics. These elephants have made their home in the Namib desert in Namibia, Africa, and subsequently, these elephants exhibit small adaptations to the extreme temperatures and terrain.

The elephant population in the Namib region was estimated to be between 2,500 - 3,500 in the 18th century. It is assumed that elephant herds moved from the wetter areas of northern central Namibia into the drier north-western regions, to take advantage of seasonal and annual resource abundance. Unfortunately, a large part of this elephant population perished in the latter half of the 19th century. This was mainly due to an increase in hunting and illegal poaching, which saw the elephant population decline to 600 – 800. By 1983, war, drought and poaching reduced these numbers to roughly 360 elephants. Increasing human population and settlements interrupted the elephants’ traditional migratory routes, which sparked human-wildlife conflict, and therefore further threatened the growth of the species.  In the 1970-1980s desert elephants were overhunted and vanished from the Ugab River, an area where they had previously lived, due to the ongoing Namibian War of Independence. A low calving rate was recorded for all groups, which was attributed to poaching and human disturbance (Pinnock, Bell and William, 2019). We now estimate the populations within the main riverbeds; Ugab, Huab, Hoarusib, Hoanib, and Uniab to be approximately 150 desert-dwelling elephants.

Day 8

Brandberg White Lady Lodge

To escape the heat of the day we will have an early breakfast and go out to go and see The White Lady Painting. The White Lady painting is a renowned piece of rock art located on a sheltered cliff in the Brandberg Mountain of Namibia. Despite its name, it is widely believed to depict a shaman in ceremonial attire rather than an actual "lady." The painting, surrounded by depictions of hunters and animals, is estimated to be over 2,000 years old and reflects the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of the San people who inhabited the region. The hike to the painting and some engravings are roughly 40min one way. Difficulty 5 You will be surrounded by the mountain as we go deeper in. Greenery and birds will be all around us.

We will be back before lunch where you have rest of the day to relax at the pool or go out and explore more of the wonderful bird species around the river. Just before sunset we will go and have a lovely sundowner drink out in the Desert in the open.

The Brandberg is renowned for its stunning rock formations and ancient cave paintings. The mountain is a sacred site for indigenous communities and attracts hikers and archaeologist interested in its cultural and natural significance. The name Brandberg refers to burning mountain. On the right angle with sunrise or sunset the sun rays give the mountain a glowing effect and look likes it is on fire. It is primarily composed of granite, which forms the core of the mountain, and is one of the largest granite intrusions in the world. Its geological history includes volcanic activity, with some parts of the surrounding area formed by basalt lava rocks. The striking rock formations and distinctive granite boulders shaped by erosion it contributes to its iconic appearance and natural beauty.
