Walvis Bay is the largest coastal town and the second largest town in Namibia. It has changed ownership several times before being handed over to Namibia by South Africa in 1994. It is the largest natural harbour on the Namibian coast and has seen significant expansion over the past decade.

Swakopmund is a beach resort town known for its German colonial architecture. Founded in 1892 by Captain Curt von François as the main harbour of German Southwest Africa, Swakopmund was established to accommodate the increased traffic between Germany and its colony, as Walvis Bay was under British control. The town retains strong German influences, with German street names, a German daily newspaper, and the German language still spoken by some residents.

Just after the Shipwreck we will pass a small town and then turning right back into the badlands. On our way we will see the highest mountain, The Brandberg standing at 2573m on our left. The vegetation will start re appearing in small trees and bushes. Passing a small mining town we will have a small break before we cover the last 90min of our journey to Twyfelfontein.

Twyfelfontein is situated in Damaraland and the area features diverse landscapes, including mountainous areas, Desert and coastal plains. The region is rich in culture, history and natural resources, with traditional livelihoods such as herding and farming.

Skeleton Coast is one of the most remote and desolate regions in the world. Characterized by vast sand dunes, rocky shores and dense fog, it earned its eerie name due to numerous shipwrecks along its treacherous coastline. The harsh environment has made it challenging for both humans and wildlife, yet it is home to unique species like deserted adapted elephants and other animals. The coastline offers a stark contrast between the desert and the Atlantic Ocean, creating hauntingly beautiful landscapes that remain largely untouched by human development, preserving its natural raw allure.

Day 7 Damaraland

After breakfast we will go and visit The Twyfelfontein Engravings, one of Africa’s largest collections of rock art and is declared a UNESCO World Heritage site of more than 2500 engravings. This will take 90 min, which 60min is walking among the engravings that will be explained to you by one of the local guides.

Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Namibia, is renowned for its ancient rock engravings. These engravings were created by the San (Bushman) people, depicting a wide range of animals, human figures and symbols. The engravings are spread across large granite slabs and offer a glimpse into the spiritual and daily life of the communities in the past.

After we have had a glimpse into the past of some cultures we will make our way back to the lodge for some time to relax and have lunch. The afternoon we will go in search of the Desert Adapted Elephants in one of Namibia’s life lines “a dry river bed”.

Desert elephants, a subspecies of African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana), inhabit the Namib desert in Namibia. These elephants have adapted to the harsh desert environment, exhibiting unique traits suited for extreme temperatures. Historically, their population in the Namib region was around 2,500 - 3,500 in the 18th century, but due to hunting and poaching, numbers plummeted to 600 – 800 by the late 19th century. By 1983, war and drought further reduced their population to about 360. Human encroachment disrupted their migratory patterns, leading to increased human-wildlife conflict. By the 1970s and 1980s, desert elephants had disappeared from the Ugab River due to overhunting during the Namibian War of Independence. Currently, the estimated population in key riverbeds like Ugab and Huab is around 150 desert-dwelling elephants.

Day 8 Etosha National Park

We leave Damaraland and head to the world famous Etosha National Park

The Etosha Pan and the area that would later come to be known as Etosha National Park was first discovered by Europeans in 1851, when explorers Charles Andersson and Francis Galton came to the wild region in the company of Ovambo traders. Etosha can be loosely translated as “Great White Place” in the Ovambo language.  The Etosha pan is undoubtedly, massive. It is the most distinctive feature of the park and can even be seen from space. Etosha is home to four of the 'big five' with a steady population of elephant, rhino, lion and leopard, but buffalo has not been resident here since the 1950s.

We arrive at our accommodation in time to take an afternoon safari.  Due the arid nature of the park many of the animals congregate around one of the many waterholes.  As the afternoon temperature cools so the animals become more active.  We will stay in the park until Sunset.
